Mahmoud Ahmadinejad: “Iran Chose The Path To Dignity…Pride”
TEHRAN – Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad spoke on national television on Saturday after he was declared winner over his popular incumbent, reformist candidate Mir Hossein Mousavi. In his speech, Ahmadinejad declared that Iranians had chosen a “path to the future” and “dignity and pride” under his administration.
Iranians took to the streets as results became evident that Ahmadinejad had won by a landslide in protest and called for a new election. The U.S. and Israel are not pleased with the outcome of the election. Israel stated today that another term under Ahmadinejad’s regime raises a nuclear threat.
Israel’s Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman issued this statement:
“In light of Teheran’s continued policies and, all the more forcefully now, in light of the victory and continuing rule of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the international community must continue to act in an uncompromising way to prevent Iran from attaining nuclear weapons….[Tehran] poses a problem to the international community – it is not personal, but stems from its policies.”
WHITE HOUSE RESPONSE
The White House said Saturday that they are looking into allegations of irregularities in the voting.
In a written statement Press Secretary Robert Gibbs stated that: “Like the rest of the world, we were impressed by the vigorous debate and enthusiasm that this election generated, particularly among young Iranians. We continue to monitor the entire situation closely, including reports of irregularities.”
President Obama is keeping a low profile and not commenting on the election or the chaos on the streets of Tehran.
