News Media Buying Into Right Wing Spin More Than Ever
The right-wing is scoring big points for its agenda thanks mostly to the news media. In recent weeks conservatives have become communications experts, attracting reporters and assignment editors to their complaints against Democrats and the Obama administration in general. From “death panels,” “socialized” healthcare,” to Obama’s “indoctrination” of school children, to forcing Van Jones to resign — the news media is being used as a megaphone for the GOP.
The surge of news about how Republicans are reacting to the White House and the Democratic majority in Congress has been extraordinary. Conservatives have band together to contact news agencies and force them to cover the Tea Parties, investigate Obama’s birth certificate, and to get those TV cameras to the health care town halls where they ambush public officials.
On the Free Republic, users have been posting contact information of assignment editors from TV and newspapers, urging their “fellows” to call and get the media to cover whatever they perceive as important. This is no small operation, great forces are behind the buzz to get the news media out to interview the parents of school children who fear Obama’s speech on Tuesday. Great efforts are being made to propagate claims that Obama is another Hitler. And the media is eating it all up.
The result? Millions of Americans at home, not knowing what to think or what to believe because the right wing is doing such a great job voicing their concerns with the aid of the TV cameras. Journalist are not analyzing what’s happening — what’s real and what are lies. They no longer operate as watchdogs for the public, but as the messengers of any message without scrutinizing facts from fiction. Assignment editors are not exercising good judgment with the type of stories that should be covered.
If the right continues to disseminate their false arguments as facts over the airwaves and the Internet with the power of the media behind them, Obama will be a one-term President. The public will be absolutely bought into the whole conservative spin, that not even a hundred Rachel Maddows, Bill Moyers, and Paul Krugman will be able to reverse.
There must be an alignment of all Progressives to stop the right wing from derailing the chances we have to finally have universal health care and all other needed reforms long overdue to the American people. We must remain engaged in the process — being outspoken, getting those reporters to hear both sides and pressuring them to discern truth from fiction.
It’s time for you to call and email those assignment editors and tell them that feeding in to the right wing fear mongering is not journalism. Encourage other Progressives to expose the propaganda machine behind each right-wing campaign. The news media has been caught up in the right’s effort to polarize and divide Americans. This is a wake up call.
