Well written historical review. I noted a lack of detail about the post revolution executions. Those executed had all been accused of, and convicted under Martial Law, of war crimes and crimes against civilians - especially women. They were mostly officers and non-coms in Batista's army. Some of them had been involved in the murder of the Rebels led by Fidel and Raul Castro, who attacked the Moncada Army Base in Santiago, CU in 1952 [shortly after Batista's Coup]. Over a hundred rebels were captured and brutally murdered after being tortured. Castro himself survived only because of the Bishop's intervention and a bit of luck. The 1959 executions were in large part, tit for tat, based on past excesses of the Army.

The other omission is the timing of Jauna's conversion to anti- Fidelista spying. Based on the date, she began shortly after the agrarian reform, which took most of the land from the big land owners. Those owners included the Castro Family, and Fidel and Raul did not play favorites for friends and family. Juana may well have felt impoverished by her own brothers. It should be noted that many members of the Bay of Pig counter Revolutionary forces were also members of the landowning class. BTW, The 1200 prisoners were returned to the US within months, in exchange for food and medicine for the Cuban children who were suffering from the recently imposed Boycott.

I also am curious how Juana rationalizes her spying by saying she would have never done anything that would have 'harmed' her brothers. Obviously, if the CIA had succeeded, her brothers would have been harmed, and probably killed. There are too many examples of dead leftist leaders in Latin America to ignore that reality. I suppose if one doesn't pull the trigger, no guilt attaches to the acts...
