Good point... I've been thinking about the similaries between the "third world" and the US, myself, lately.

Hi Gilbert, excellent piece, many thanks for writing it. We have to keep repeating these messages over and over to whomever will listen - there's no middle ground that can be taken on this issue; there is only ONE acceptable resolution. I do believe that ultimately the United States will be obliged to repeal its capital punishment system in the face of the growing criticisms of cost and procedure, and as a result of international pressure. Your point about the hypocrisy of a supposedly 'world-leading' nation denouncing human rights neglect in other countries, given the situation in its own backyard is spot on! Again, thanks.

I have taken the liberty of referencing this article in my blog - and I hope it is OK to reuse the photograph (can't see any copyright restrictions?)

Japan’s death penalty effectively scrapped with arrival of Keiko Chiba http://digg.com/d3156md

This leaves the US as the ONLY industrialized, developed, Western nation to have the death penalty, and sometimes I wonder if we can even be considered that, or would more accurately be called a 3rd world country based on things like our health care system, treatment of the poor, and electrical grid/infrastructure.
