Desperate Haitians Trying To Cross Border Into Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic is getting an influx of Haitians trying to cross into the country, desperate to get anything from food, candles, to medical aid. The newspaper La Republica reports that the border patrol on the border has been torn by Haitians wanting to cross over. Translation from Listin Diario article:

“Mr. military man please let me get through because my wife and two children went to Port-au-Prince two days ago to get health care and I haven’t heard from them. I just want to use the phone to see if I can get a hold of someone,” begged Haitian citizen, Reubert Paul Deadow, to the Dominican border agents.

According to the paper, the border agents will allow Haitians that have a passport with a Dominican Republican visa.

The Dominican Republic, Haiti’s neighboring country, suffered almost no damage after the 7.0 magnitude quake shook the island on Tuesday. Schools have remained open and business is usual in that country. But despite its luck the country has been sensitive to the needs of its next door neighbor; the health department has sent medical envoys to assist the people who were affected in Haiti.
