Powerful Cyclone May Devastate Fiji

A powerful cyclone is nearing the Fiji islands in the South Pacific with winds gusts up to 145 miles per hour.
The Category 3 storm, “Tropical cyclone Thomas” is expected to land on Tuesday just north of Fiji’s capital of Suva.
Thousands of people have been evacuated from the path of the cyclone. According to the Telegraph.co.uk:
An estimated five thousand people have fled their homes to take refuge in 90 hurricane-proof buildings in the northern part of Fiji’s second-largest island Vanua Levu.
The storm is expected to intensify in the next 48 hours. Hotels and resorts have been vacated as people flee one the most powerful storms this year.

The Pacific is a huge place for these storms to gather strength. Button down the hatches my Fijian friends!
I helped a friend from Australia put a small solar powered computer lab in at the secondary school at Lomaloma on Vanua Balavu. Vanua Balavu is the principal island in the norther lau group of islands. It lies to the East of the main islands. It has about 1200 residents with the majority living in low lying villages along the coast within a meter or so of sea level. Many live in traditional thatch bures, or in wood frame housing covered in tin coated corregated steel. I made two trips there. I feel for the people there as such a storm will be a test for them. I am wondering if they were able to get the two racks of solar panels off of the roof and into the building before the winds got too bad. I will hope for the best for my friends there.
