Runaway Toyota Prius Had Old Brakes

(SAN DIEGO, CA) — The story of a California man who called 911 last week panicking because he couldn’t stop his runaway Toyota Prius is being questioned.
In recent months, Toyota has had to recall more than 5 million cars over claims of sudden acceleration. But according to investigators, the Toyota Hybrid driven by 61-year-old James Sikes, may have had old, worn-out brakes.
Sikes’ car sped to 90 miles per hour on Highway 8 in San Diego on March 10, but when he couldn’t stop his Prius he called for help. California Highway Patrol vehicles chased the Hybrid, instructing Sikes on how to stop the car. When the car finally came to a halt, the driver told police that it had accelerated on its own.
Records show that Sikes has more than $700,000 in debt and number of other financial troubles.
According to The Wall Street Journal, safety officials still have the case under investigation.
