Breaking: Right Wing Begins Internet Attacks
NEWS JUNKIE POSTApr 5, 2010 at 4:38 pm
Following a coordinated window smashing campaign by angry conservatives following the historic passing of health care reform, the attacks have now moved to cyberspace. Various websites critical of the Tea Parties, Sarah Palin, and the right wing overreaction to health care reform have begun experiencing DDOS attacks by hackers.
Sarah Jones, reports:
Politicususa has been told we are under DDOS attack. It is not a spammer, it is a deliberate attack. Our server host is diligently working to resolve this issue and if they can determine the origin of the attacker, they will be prosecuted.
According to unnamed sources, there have been attacks on at least 4 other progressive websites after stories on Sarah Palin, all which all prefer not to be mentioned, including 2 major ones. The attack on PoliticusUSA, administrated by Jason Easley, is the most extensive attack on a progressive website during this wave however, and the site was still down at publishing time.
These coordinated attacks are the latest from an increasingly desperate and radical conservative movement following the landslide victory of Barack Obama and progressive Democrats in the 2008 election. They follow such deplorable acts as windows getting smashed in multiple locations (mainly Democratic offices), people being spit on, a man repeated ramming a car that had an Obama bumper sticker, a hero of the Civil Rights movement being called a “nigger”, assassination threats, the openly gay Congressman Barney Frank being called a “faggot”, a propane line being cut at at a residence, a mysterious white powder being mailed, a noose being faxed, and threats to kill the children of a member of congress who voted for reform.
There has been a clear trend going on for the last 18 months since Sarah Palin entered the political landscape. The rhetoric has been jacked up to epic levels, and the fear, hate, and intolerance has grown exponentially as a result. In response to the health care vote, she told her followers on Facebook: “Don’t retreat, RELOAD!”
There has been a dramatic rise in so called “Patriot” groups over the last year, with the Southern Poverty Law Center recording a massive 244% rise in these groups last year alone. The SPLC adds, “Militias – the paramilitary arm of the Patriot movement – were a major part of the increase, growing from 42 militias in 2008 to 127 in 2009.“ One week ago, acting on evidence of imminent attacks, an anti-terrorism task force raided the Hutaree militia in three states.
Conservative Christian extremists are also targeting Obama with prayers for his death, virtual fatwas, and slogans such as: “Let his days be few; and let another take his office. Let his children be fatherless, and his wife a widow.”
There is an interwoven web of conservative groups that have responded to heightened sense of incitement from various sources, including the so called ‘entertainers’ at Fox News and talk radio. There is a chilling feel in the air reminiscent of the days before the Oklahoma City bombing by other right wing terrorists over a decade ago.
These DDOS, or denial-of-service attacks, are a form of cyberwarfare, meant to shut down a website. According to Wikipedia:
One common method of attack involves saturating the target (victim) machine with external communications requests, such that it cannot respond to legitimate traffic, or responds so slowly as to be rendered effectively unavailable. In general terms, DoS attacks are implemented by either forcing the targeted computer(s) to reset, or consuming its resources so that it can no longer provide its intended service or obstructing the communication media between the intended users and the victim so that they can no longer communicate adequately. Denial-of-service attacks are considered violations of the IAB’s Internet proper use policy, and also violate the acceptable use policies of virtually all Internet Service Providers. They also commonly constitute violations of the laws of individual nations.
The founder of FreakOutNation, Anomaly One Hundred was also was the target of a virus that spread through Facebook yesterday. Reportedly, this was a derogatory picture that linked to a phishing site, and has since been removed by the Facebook staff.

Right Wing Violence Goes Cyber as Progressive Blog Politicususa.com Is DDoS Attacked
The right wing has gone from threatening physical violence to carrying out actual cyber attacks on liberal and progressive websites.
The latest victim of this behavior is the progressive liberal blog PoliticusUSA.com(http://www.politicususa.com), which has been under a major DDoS* assault for the past ten days in retaliation for several stories about the Tea Party movement, right wing violence, and Sarah Palin.
PoliticusUSA is a growing website, founded in 2008. It has doubled in size every year for the past the past two years and has in fact grown 600% over the previous year due to the strength of its unique political opinion and progressive point of view.
DDoS attacks deliberately target a victim website in order to disable it and are a violation of:
1. National Information Infrastructure Protection Act of 1996
2. United States Code Title 18 Section 1030 (Fraud and Related Activity in Connection with Computers)
3. The US Patriot Act of 2001 (which amends United States Code Title 18 Section 1030)
Our host provider has been working around the clock to combat the attack and return PoliticusUSA to full, protected online status. We are committed to continuing to serve our readers and appreciate their support though this attack. We have been in contact with law enforcement and are exploring the possibility of prosecuting the perpetrators to the full extent of the law.
PoliticusUSA owner/administrator Jason Easley said, “These politically motivated attacks are just a temporary delay. These malicious attacks will not deter us from providing the best quality coverage of both progressive politics and the extremist behavior of the right wing, the Tea Party movement, Sarah Palin and the GOP. Our first amendment rights will not be deterred by illegal attempts to intimidate us or silence our criticisms. ”
PoliticusUSA writer Sarah Jones, who has been the victim of previous attempts to censor her writing on Sarah Palin, emphatically added, “It is Un-American to the core to resort to intimidation and violence in the face of dissenting political opinion and lost elections, this violation of our freedoms is further evidence of the far right’s desperation and declining influence. As Sarah Palin recently said, ‘We’re not going to sit down and shut up.’ At PoliticusUSA, we’re going to stand up for our freedoms.”
PoliticusUSA is honored to join the ever-growing progressive websites being targeted by the right wing.
