Music Artist Wyclef Jean Will Run For President In Haiti
According to several reports and a Haitian official, singer Wyclef Jean will indeed run for the presidency of Haiti in the upcoming November elections. Haiti has been under the government of Rene Preval since 2006. Jean will make a formal announcement this week on CNN.
Jean is perhaps the most well-known Haitian artist in the world and he has been able to use his fame to highlight the poverty and deplorable conditions of his people. Soon after the January 12 earthquake, Jean led a campaign to collect funds to help Haitians through his charity, Yele Haiti.
Before the earthquake, Jean paired up with actress Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt to raise awareness about the situation in Haiti. Jolie is another well-known known celebrity that has advocated for the Caribbean country.
Haitians have rarely been able to trust their governments, which is plagued by corrupt politicians. Preval’s government has been invisible from the public before and after the quake, with Haitians expecting little or no help from it. Jean is someone Haitians admire and almost worship, a good sign for someone trying to win their vote.
The strong connection that Haitians have for Jean is not only artistically, but Yele Haiti is a foundation that has had a strong presence in the country, crowning Jean as a humanitarian and philanthropist. Yet, we must not forget that reggae singer Bob Marley had a similar effect on the people of Jamaica, which didn’t settle well with the wealthy status quo at the time. Many conspiracy theories point out that Marley’s death was planned by powerful men who didn’t appreciate the singer’s ability to rally up the masses.
The few rich and powerful Haitians and the corrupt business interests in the country will be a major obstacle that Jean will have to dance around if he is to succeed at winning the election and become president. Lack of political experience shouldn’t be a problem for the 37-year old, but his opposition will likely use that against him. But, if Wyclef is able to promote himself as a Haitian man who has the best interest of the poor at heart, with Yele Haiti to prove it, his win will be guaranteed.
Jean will have to maintain a strong alliance with the United Nations, which has an immense presence in the country. The UN has previously worked with Yele Haiti in launching the “Together For Haiti” campaign in 2008. Fellow actress Angelina Jolie is also well involved with the UN as one of their Goodwill Ambassadors; her support could move the UN’s Head of Stabilization In Haiti, Edmond Mulet, to help Jean’s presidential campaign.
What does Bill Clinton think of Jean’s run? We’re looking into it. Clinton has been actively gathering support for rebuilding Haiti and he is very popular among most Haitians. A Clinton endorsement for Jean’s campaign would be very meaningful and would send a very clear message to how politics and government is done in the country: the time has come for real, radical change in Haiti. Fugee Power.
