Rising Tide

Union participation has declined steadily since the 1960’s thanks to the recent prevailing small-government, big-business deregulation, hands off approach to free-market economics. And as it turns out, when they said smaller government, what the GOP really meant was, personal government, they wanted you and I to play no part at all in deciding how they redistributed our tax dollars to the top of the income pyramid.

US House Passes Historic Wall St. Reform Act

The US House of Representatives voted today to pass H.R. 4173, the Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act of 2009. Sponsored by Barney Frank (D-MA), this bill would protect consumers and investors, provide for financial regulatory reform, and regulate the over-the-counter derivatives markets. No Republicans voted for the bill.

While addressing the dreadful unemployment situation and a shaky economy is urgent, it would be wise to address the financial consequences of the Obama administration escalation of the conflict in Afghanistan. According to the Brookings Institute and the Congressional Research Service, the total cost for both wars in Iraq and Afghanistan will be 1.08 trillion for 2010.
