Overdue Minimum Wage Increase Takes Effect

Despite opposition from businesses, the federal minimum hourly wage will get go up $.70 cents today to $7.25 an hour. This increase may come as a blessing to workers in low-wage jobs across the country who may not often see such wage increases.

Secret Bush-era Prisons Continue Under Obama

Despite President Barack Obama’s declaration that the United States is not and never will be at war with Islam, government practices suggest otherwise. In June, the ACLU filed complaints against the U.S. Bureau of Prisons (BOP) for illegally establishing secret prisons called Communications Management Units, or CMUs.

“Moon,” A Movie Worth Your Time

From the film’s trailer, “Moon” doesn’t look like an exciting movie that is full action or gore. It could appeal to be quite ordinary, with perhaps one twist that would make it worth watching. But there is nothing left to be desired about “Moon” when you’re done watching it, except that you wish your friends would have gotten over the boring trailer and had come to see this fine movie with you.

President Obama’s Visits With For-Profit Healthcare Executives Puzzles Advocacy Groups

According to a Washington-based watchdog group, President Barack Obama met with top executives from the for-profit health insurance industry 35 times since February. By contrast, President Obama has had zero meetings with some of the largest health consumer advocacy groups.
