G8 Summit Could Be More About Iran Than Afghanistan

By Gilbert Mercier, NEWS JUNKIE POST

The G8 Summit starts in Italy on Thursday. The agenda was supposed to be mainly about Afghanistan until Iran’s Foreign Minister declined to attend.

The  US envoy in Afghanistan and Pakistan, Richard Holbrooke, will be representing the US at the summit.

One of the goals of the G8 summit was to address the regional issues between Afghanistan and Iran, but now that no representation will be there from Iran, the meeting may have a lot less impact in resolving anything of substance.

Iran’s Foreign Minister pulled out of the summit over the aftermath of the Iranian election and the harsh criticisms the country received from the EU and the US over the brutal crack down on demonstrators.

Its is likely that the topic between the Foreign Ministers will switch from Afghanistan to the crisis in Iran.
